Tuition

Scottish Piper which is based in Edinburgh,  was founded in 1999 with the sole aim of providing Bagpipe Tuition to all, regardless of financial status,  in a fun and enjoyable manner. This in no way implies a sub standard lesson,  on the contrary,  it is well known that youngsters (and adults!) learn faster when they enjoy the subject. With his education and piping qualifications backed up by 46 years of experience John guarantees that ALL his pupils will reach the required standard to play in public. Once a pupil has learnt the basic and a few tunes it is then up to the student to decide what they want to do in the piping world: some are desperate to play in competition, some want to play at events and some just want to play for their own enjoyment. Most combine various options! No options are set in stone, however all students are expected to attempt the examinations set by The Associated Board of Bagpipe Schools. (ABBS) The following subjects are also taught to all pupils in the normal course of lessons:  Musical Theory, Rhythm, Canntaireachd, Piobaireachd and Maintenance, however for the more experienced piper who wishes to brush up a particular skill or  to prepare for a competition or  examination short courses are available.  These courses are tailor made for each piper and are designed  to ensure they reach their individual goals.

Scottish Piper can provide a loan of all equipment and supplies reeds free of charge. This is paid for by all the pupils busking with John Those that do go busking are rewarded with a percentage of the money collected at the end of the year.

Scottish Piper  prides itself on being a family  of pipers and new pipers (and their parents) are always invited to the regular shows and all Scottish Piper pupils have regular meals out, maintenance days, theatre visits, and fun days throughout the year all paid by Scottish Piper.

John Main, the principal tutor,  is one of the country’s highest qualified teachers holding not only The Teacher’s Certificate but also The Senior Teacher’s Certificate plus the prestigious Diploma of Piping which is only conferred on pipers who have reached a standard of excellence in playing and knowledge of the Great Highland Bagpipe. He is also a Senior Examiner with ABBS and was responsible for most of the new and innovative syllabus which has been a hit with pipers around the world.

As a winner of The Solo World Championship and numerous medals John has been guest speaker at other piping schools and colleges around the world and his relaxed style has been a hit at many summer schools as well as pipe band evenings. Although he has had to cut back his busy schedule John says that he will always try to help when he can.
